To choose a film director, discover a common thread that unifies each of the director’s films, and then develop an integrated visual system that spans across multiple design deliverables and works as a complete system.
Director Alejandro González Iñárritu was chosen because of a deep appreciation of how his six films share raw, relatable, and often tragic human experiences. The film festival, Transcending Desolation, translates the binding message of the films that life is complex and fragile, but we can find beauty and transformation in the bleakest moments if we practice empathy. A visual language of layered photography featuring people reflecting on memories and desolate scenery was utilized to depict the sorrow and the beauty that can be found in dealing with loss. A muted color palette with pops of mystical green and hard, cold materials such as cement and steel were used to reference life's challenging transformations.
